What is rete testis?

The rete testis is a network of tubules located within the testicle that serves as a connection between the seminiferous tubules (where spermatogenesis takes place) and the epididymis (where sperm matures and is stored). The rete testis functions to transport sperm from the seminiferous tubules to the epididymis for further maturation.

The rete testis is composed of interconnected tubules lined with flat epithelial cells that are involved in the transportation of sperm. These tubules are surrounded by connective tissue and smooth muscle fibers that help to regulate the flow of sperm through the rete testis.

Disorders or abnormalities of the rete testis can affect sperm production and transport, leading to infertility or other reproductive issues in males. In some cases, obstruction of the rete testis can cause a build-up of sperm, leading to pain and swelling in the testicle known as a spermatocele.

Overall, the rete testis plays a crucial role in the process of sperm production and maturation in the male reproductive system.
